Worth The Fight:
More Than Just Being There

Sermon Recap

This sermon centers on the idea that love becomes real when it moves from intention to action. In Galatians 5, John 13, and James 2, Aaron shows that Christian freedom is not freedom to stay self-focused, but freedom to serve others humbly in love, following the example of Jesus.

Ice Breakers

  • What’s a household chore you avoid, even though it really is not that big of a deal?
  • If someone described you as “always helpful,” what is the first thing they’d probably say you help with?
  • Spring is here. What is one thing you always mean to do this time of year, but somehow never actually get around to?

Discussion Questions

1. When was a time you meant to do something kind or helpful for someone, but never actually followed through?
  • Context: Aaron’s main point was that most of us do not struggle to value love in theory. We struggle when love starts costing us time, comfort, energy, or convenience. He framed the whole message around this idea: intentions are nice, but love becomes real in action.
  • Application: Where in your life right now is love most likely to stay an intention instead of becoming action?

2. What usually happens when your time, plans, or comfort get interrupted by someone else’s needs?
  • Context: In Galatians 5:13, Paul says we were called to be free, but not to use that freedom for self-indulgence. Instead, freedom in Christ turns us outward so we can serve one another humbly in love.
  • Application: What would it look like for you to treat your freedom this week as an opportunity to love someone, rather than just protect your own comfort?

    3. Have you ever had to do a task that felt beneath you, unnoticed, or uncomfortable? What was that like?
    • Context: In John 13, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet, even knowing betrayal, denial, and failure were coming. Aaron emphasized that Jesus did not serve from guilt or weakness. He served from strength, identity, and love.

    • Application: What is one “low place” act of love or service that you tend to avoid, but may actually be an invitation from Jesus?

      4. What is the difference between saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” and actually stepping in to help?
      • Context: In James 2, faith that never moves into action is called dead. Aaron pointed out how easy it is to offer sincere words while still remaining passive, especially when helping would require initiative or sacrifice.
      • Application: How can you grow in becoming someone who does not just offer support, but takes action without waiting for everything to be easy?

        5. What is one area of life where you know your next step, but have been putting it off?
        • Context: Near the end of the sermon, Aaron clarified that this message is not about doing everything at once. It is about taking the next step Jesus is putting in front of you, whether that is baptism, giving, joining a group, serving, or another act of obedience.
        • Application: What do you think your next step of love and obedience is right now, and what has been keeping you from taking it?

          Prayer

          • Make sure to spend time in prayer as a group when you meet.
          • Have group members share prayer requests, and pray for them.
            • You could have one person pray for all the requests, or each member pray for one person.
            • Keep a record of those requests and ask about them on a weekly basis.

          Leader Tip

Listen for the gap between intention and action as people share. Many group members already know the right thing to do. What they often need is help naming one concrete next step and the courage to actually take it.
