Sermon Discussion Guide - 09/28/2025

Formed:
DEPENDABILITY

Sermon Recap

Dependability is about faithfulness in action. In Matthew 21, Jesus contrasted empty promises with obedience that shows up, highlighting that God values our follow-through more than our words. From Jesus’ teachings to Elisha’s example, Scripture shows that dependable disciples finish what they start, and God builds His church through people who consistently show up.

Ice Breakers

  • Have you ever closed your activity rings on your smartwatch by doing something that didn’t exactly count as exercise?
  • What’s the worst (or most creative) excuse you’ve ever given (or heard) for skipping out on something?
  • If you could hire someone to be “dependable” for one task in your life (like making dinner, doing laundry, or handling emails), what would it be?

Discussion Questions

1. When was a time you intended to do something important but never actually followed through?
  • Context: In Matthew 21:28–32, Jesus told a parable about two sons: one who said yes but didn’t act, and one who initially said no but followed through. Jesus used this to show that obedience matters more than empty promises.
  • Application: Where in your life do you need to turn intentions into consistent action for God?
2. How have you experienced frustration when leaders (in church, work, or family) didn’t live out what they preached or promised?
  • Context: Jesus exposed the “say-do gap” of the religious leaders, who clung to authority but failed in responsibility. Their words didn’t align with their actions.
  • Application: What steps can you take to shrink your own “say-do gap” so that your words and commitments reflect real obedience?
3. Have you ever made a decision where you “burned the plows” so there was no turning back? What happened?
  • Context: In 1 Kings 19, Elisha showed his commitment by sacrificing his oxen and burning his plows - an all-in response to God’s call.
  • Application: Where might God be calling you to move from half-hearted commitment to full dependability in your discipleship or service?
4. Who in your life has modeled steady, behind-the-scenes faithfulness that made a big difference for you?
  • Context: Paul describes the church as a body in which every role is vital (1 Corinthians 12:21–22). Often, the “hidden” parts carry the greatest weight.
  • Application: What role has God given you in the body of Christ, and how can you embrace its importance with renewed dependability?
5. Do you find it easier to say “yes” too quickly or to say “no” too often?
  • Context: Jesus taught in Matthew 5:37, “Let your yes be yes, and your no, no.” Dependability means honest commitments and follow-through.
  • Application: What practical step can you take this week - whether preparing early, showing up on time, or finishing well - to strengthen your dependability in serving God and others?

Prayer

  • Thank God for being faithful and dependable, never failing in His promises.
  • Pray for strength to move from good intentions to faithful action.
  • Ask God to help each person embrace their role in the church with joy and consistency.
  • Lift up needs in your group and community, trusting God to guide and provide.

Leader Tip

Consistency beats intensity. You don't have to impress your group with brilliant insights or big moments every week. What matters most is showing up prepared, creating space for honest conversation, and being faithful in your role as a shepherd. Over time, your steady presence will shape the culture of your group and help people experience Jesus in real, tangible ways.
