When Fear Chooses A King:
the cost of fitting in
Sermon Recap
In 1 Samuel 12, Israel gets what they asked for - a king like the nations, and Samuel helps them see the hidden bill that comes with “fitting in.” The sermon challenged us with a simple question: “What do you run to when you need to feel safe?” Because, whatever we put on the throne besides Jesus will eventually start taking from us.
Ice Breakers
- If your life had a “default setting” you go back to when you’re tired or stressed, what is it? Why?
- What’s one trend you tried just to “fit in”… and immediately regretted?
- What’s a movie or show you rewatch when you need comfort?
Discussion Questions
1. When you’re exhausted or stressed, what kind of decision do you tend to make faster than you should?
- Context: The sermon pointed out that we usually reach for control when we’re tired or afraid, and we often don’t stop to ask what it will cost us later.
- Application: What’s one decision in your life right now that needs a “pause” so you can put it in God’s hands before you choose?
2. Have you ever been under a leader (boss, coach, friend, family member) who “took more than they gave”? What did that cost you?
- Context: Samuel does an integrity audit: he asks if he ever took, defrauded, oppressed, or accepted a bribe - contrasting his leadership with the kind of king who will “take and take.”
- Application: Where might God be inviting you to lead differently - serving instead of taking - in your home, work, or relationships?
3. When was a time you made a “normal” choice that slowly pulled you away from what mattered most?
- Context: Samuel retells Israel’s story of repeated rescue, and warns that wanting to be like everyone else costs us our identity: trading what’s holy for what’s common.
- Application: What’s one “common” thing you may need to say no to so you can protect what God is doing in you (worship, community, serving, obedience)?
4. What’s your gut reaction when consequences hit? Do you usually feel shame, anger, denial, or motivation?
- Context: God sends a storm in the dry season to expose what Israel chose. The sermon framed God’s discipline as loving clarity: sometimes the kindest thing God can do is pull back the curtain.
- Application: Is there an area where you’ve been ignoring warning signs? What would repentance look like this week, not just feeling bad, but changing direction?
5. What makes you feel like you’re “too far gone” or disqualified, like grace couldn’t cover that part of your story?
- Context: Samuel names Israel’s sin as real and serious, but still calls them to serve the Lord. The sermon emphasized that grace isn’t cheap, it’s costly, and it’s never hopeless for someone who turns back to Jesus.
- Application: What’s one honest next step you can take toward Jesus right now (confession, prayer with someone, baptism conversation, re-engaging community)?
Prayer
- Make sure to spend time in prayer as a group when you meet.
- Have group members share prayer requests, and pray for them.
- You could have one person pray for all the requests, or each member pray for one person.
- Keep a record of those requests and ask about them on a weekly basis.
Leader Tip
Make space for honest questions. This topic pokes at fear, control, and where we run for safety, so people may feel exposed or defensive. Set a tone where questions and wrestling are safe. You don’t have to “clean it up.” Let people be real.
