Hard to Love:
I'd rather not
Sermon Recap
Jonah’s story is about more than a big fish - it’s about how far we’ll go to avoid obeying God when He calls us to extend mercy to people we’d rather avoid. Jonah’s Nineveh was violent, sinful, and undeserving in his eyes. Yet, in God’s eyes, Nineveh was worth reaching. Like Jonah, we’re challenged to stop running from God’s call and start extending the same grace we’ve been given. (Jonah 1; Romans 5:8)
Ice Breakers
- What’s the silliest thing you’ve done to avoid a task you didn’t want to do?
- If you could choose anywhere to “run away” for a day, where would it be and why?
- What’s the funniest excuse you’ve ever heard (or given) for not doing something?
Discussion Questions
- Context: Jonah ran in the opposite direction when God called him to Nineveh—a place he despised. We often avoid God’s call when it makes us uncomfortable or challenges our prejudices.
- Application: Who or where might be your “Nineveh” right now, and what’s keeping you from going there?
- Context: Jonah went “down” to Joppa, “down” into the boat, and eventually “down” into the sea. Avoidance of God’s call often begins a downward spiral in our own lives.
- Application: How have you seen avoidance of God’s direction lead to negative consequences in your life or relationships?
- Context: Jonah justified running because he didn’t want Nineveh to receive mercy. We often justify disobedience by prioritizing comfort, relationships, or personal reasoning over God’s mission.
- Application: What common excuses keep believers from stepping into God’s assignments, and which one tempts you most?
- Context: Jonah’s storm didn’t just affect him—it endangered the sailors too. Our sin or disobedience can harm the people around us.
- Application: How can being obedient to God create blessings not just for you, but for others in your life?
- Context: Jonah’s problem wasn’t misunderstanding God—it was resenting His mercy for people Jonah didn’t believe deserved it.
- Application: How does remembering God’s grace toward you help you extend it to people who are “hard to love”?
Prayer
- Pray for courage to obey God’s call, even when it’s uncomfortable.
- Pray for God to soften your heart toward your “Nineveh” and give you wisdom in approaching them.
- Thank God for His grace toward you and ask Him to help you extend that same grace to others.
- Pray for the group’s personal needs and for opportunities to demonstrate God’s love this week.
Leader Tip
Be spiritually and practically prepared before your group meets - don't wing it. Review the discussion guide, pray over your group members by name, and ask God to reveal any “Nineveh” situations where you can lead by example in obedience. Your group doesn't need you to have all the answers, but when you’re ready, the group will feel both your care and your commitment.
