God Can Use That:
What if He's Already Calling?
Sermon Recap
In Exodus 3, Moses is living hidden in Midian, stuck in a “chapter” shaped by regret, when God meets him at the burning bush and calls him to return to Egypt. Moses’ “Who am I?” is answered by God’s “I will be with you,” showing that God’s call doesn’t depend on our perfection; it heals our past and sends us forward in purpose (Exodus 3:1–12).
Ice Breakers
- What’s a book or show you started but never finished? What “stalled” you?
- Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever gone barefoot?
- What’s a hobby or plan you “paused” and never un-paused? Is it still worth finishing or is it time to let it go?
Discussion Questions
1. When was a time you chose a smaller, safer path to avoid something painful?
- Context: Moses fled to Midian after a failure and built a quiet, safe life there, but God met him in hiding and spoke his name (Exodus 2–3).
- Application: Where might you be “in Midian,” and what first step would look like coming out of hiding with God’s help?
2. What voices shape your identity most right now - your past, your fears, or God?
- Context: Moses asked, “Who am I?” and God answered with presence, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:11–12).
- Application: What would change this week if you made God’s presence, not your résumé or regret, the loudest voice?
3. Have you ever believed a mistake permanently disqualified you? What happened?
- Context: Moses’ past (killing an Egyptian) didn’t cancel God’s purpose; grace reframed his story and redirected his future (Exodus 2:11–15; 3:10).
- Application: Which specific regret needs to be re-named by grace, and what obedient step could turn it into testimony?
4. How do you typically respond when you sense a holy moment - lean in or look away?
- Context: On holy ground Moses hid his face, but God’s holiness was an invitation, not a trap, drawing him near for healing and sending.
- Application: What simple practice (prayer, confession, conversation) will help you lean into holy moments this week?
5. When has God stretched you beyond comfort for the sake of others?
- Context: God promised a future sign: “You (plural) shall serve God on this mountain,” tying Moses’ call to the worship and freedom of an entire people (Exodus 3:12).
- Application: Where might your “yes” unlock blessing for someone else, and who needs you to step forward now?
Prayer
- Thank God for meeting us in our “Midian” places and for calling us by name.
- Ask for courage to trust “I will be with you” more than “Who am I?” this week.
- Pray for healing from past wounds so our stories become testimonies of grace.
- Lift up personal needs in the group and people God may be sending us to serve.
Leader Tip
Come prepared and present, not perfect. Pray in advance, review the guide, and arrive warm and attentive - your consistency and care set the room’s culture. You’re a shepherd, not a Bible encyclopedia; ask good questions, notice where people are, and follow up outside the meeting with a quick text or encouragement. Warm beats impressive every time.
